BACKGROUND: The use of the X-class (or "X-cage") to protect and ensure the non-circulation of material that is fragile or particularly vulnerable to theft or mutilation has been largely superseded by the use of the Harvard Depository. Discontinued categories include XF (format problems), XL (semi-rare), XM (miniature books), XP (poor paper), XR (erotica), XS (serials with format problems), XT (boxed material kept together by source), XVG (Photostats) and XZ (portfolio-sized items). These types of material should now be sent to HD. (Consult the book selector if some other disposition seems preferable.) The X sub-classes still in active use (mostly for non-book materials) are listed below.
PROCEDURES: For material going to HD which the book-selector has designated as non-circulating, add a note to the LOC in subfield n indicating the reason for the restriction. Use one of the following terms:
e.g. LOC---------------------|n Non-circulating (poor paper)
For material being classed in the active X categories, use the next available number on the check sheets kept in the black folder in Room 191 (Rear).
