Germanic Division

Frankfurt Book Fair 1949
The Germanic Division is one of four language divisions in HCL Technical Services. The Division supports the mission of the Harvard College Library by carrying primary responsibility for the acquisition and organization of the Library's Germanic collections in all formats, including networked resources. In providing professional quality service to the faculty, students, and staff that use the Harvard College Library (and, when appropriate, to other scholars worldwide), the Division works closely with the HCL Germanic bibliographers in providing timely and accurate access to Germanic-language materials.

The Division is responsible for maintaining accurate inventory control through the holdings found in HOLLIS, and it is committed to creating quality bibliographic and authority records that are shared internationally according to national and international standards. In possessing special expertise in the bibliographic control of Germanic language materials, it provides leadership, collaborates, and acts as a general resource for the bibliographic description and access to these materials on an institutional, national, and international scale.

The Germanic Division is primarily responsible for language materials in German, Swedish, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, and Norwegian. In addition to these languages, the Division processes materials in Afrikaans, Faroese, Frisian, Greenlandic, Hungarian, Icelandic, and Sami.
