Getting Started in Zoology Research

This guide provides a set of resources useful for introductory undergraduate research in Zoology at the Cabot Science Library. This list is not intended to be exhaustive or comprehensive. Cabot Library holds the general science collections for the university; additional resources are available at the Ernst Mayr Library of the Museum of Comparative Zoology. Please consult the HOLLIS catalog and the E-Research @ Harvard site for all of Harvard’s holdings.

Data Sets

IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:iucnredl
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species provides taxonomic, conservation status and distribution information on taxa at risk of extinction. The database at this Web site is a subset of the list of threatened taxa, maintained as a data set by the Species Survival Commission’s Red List Programme as part of the SSC's Species Information Service (SIS), but does not include any species listed as Lower Risk/least concern. The taxonomic groups that have been comprehensively assessed are birds and mammals. This is produced by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.

Journals

You can locate the journals available at Harvard by searching the HOLLIS catalog by the journal’s title. If HOLLIS lists your journal as a “Networked Resource”, it is also available full-text online, and is then accessed via the E-Research @ Harvard site. Individual articles within the journals must be located using the INDEXES below.

Databases for Journal Articles

Zoological Record Plus (1978- )
http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:zorecord
Zoological Record is the "unofficial register" for taxonomy and systematics, but all areas of zoology and animal sciences research are covered, including conservation and environmental science, evolution, genetics, geographical and fossil records, marine and freshwater biology, parasitology and disease, reproduction, taxonomy and systematics, laboratory and field techniques, and veterinary studies. An online thesaurus of around 10,000 controlled terms arranged in hierarchies helps locate appropriate search terms.

BIOSIS Previews (Biological Abstracts) (1969- )
http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:biosisp1
BIOSIS Previews is a database for life science research covering traditional areas of biology and zoology as well as biomedical fields, agriculture, pharmacology and ecology. Interdisciplinary fields such as biochemistry, biophysics, bioengineering and biotechnology are also included.

CAB Abstracts (1910- )
http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:cababstr
The CAB Abstracts database indexes literature in agriculture, forestry, human and animal nutrition, animal health, natural resource management and conservation, and related human health. Focal areas are animal and plant science, crop protection, parasitology, soil science, rural development, economics, horticulture, and agricultural engineering. Its geographic scope is global, with emphasis on African and Latin American studies

ASFA Aquatic Sciences (1978- )
http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.eresource:aquascfa
ASFA is a database in the field of aquatic resources, including aquaculture, aquatic organisms, aquatic pollution, conservation, environmental quality, fisheries, freshwater environments, limnology, marine biotechnology, marine environments, meteorology, oceanography, policy and legislation, and wildlife management.
