All of the following can also be found at Harvard Libraries, by clicking on E-RESEARCH @ Harvard Libraries, then clicking on Find E-RESOURCES.
Online Databases
MLA International Bibliography (MLA)
The MLA International Bibliography, produced by the Modern Language Association, consists of citations to materials in literature, modern languages, linguistics and folklore. The MLA provides access to scholarly articles in over 3,000 journals and series. It also covers relevant monographs, book chapters, working papers, proceedings, bibliographies and dissertations.
The drop-down menus provide for searching by various means (keyword, author of the article, etc.) and searches may be limited by date, type of publication, language, etc. From the results screen, citations or full-text may be e-mailed by selecting that option either from the abstract screen or the full-text. Printing is also possible. The link to the MLA Directory of Periodicals allows for browsing or searching for titles. Entries include notes on the scope of the journal, publication, editorial and submission details, submission requirements et al.
Full-text links will appear for some articles, with the options of printing, e-mailing or saving results to disk. In other cases, the Find It @ Harvard links will lead to the specific record in the HOLLIS catalog or to a link to the catalog search screen.
Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI)
The Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI) contains citations to articles in more than 400 scholarly journals published in Latin America or treating Latin American and U.S. Hispanic topics. HAPI also includes book reviews. It covers 1970 to present in the following subject areas: “politics and government, public administration, foreign relations, commerce and trade, banking and finance, business and industry, economic development and policy issues, economic integration, social movements, indigenous affairs, gender studies, environmental issues, history, geography, archaeology, anthropology, ethnography, folklore, religion, art, literature, drama, film."
Familiarity with the thesaurus and subject searching will lead to more precise results sets. Click on Resources from the main page, then HAPI Thesaurus to learn about searching protocols and how the thesaurus is constructed. Subheadings applicable to literary figures are listed under "Asturias, Miguel Angel." To see these, click on Thesaurus from the search page. “Columbian literature” is the example for subheadings related to country/genre. In general, placing an author’s name in the Subject search field yields fewer, more targeted results than using keyword. Keyword may be used in combination with subject.
Historical Abstracts is a reference guide to the history of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding the United States and Canada, which are covered in America: History and Life). Currently over 2,000 journals published throughout the world are covered in the database, including key historical journals from virtually every major country. Citations often include abstracts (in English). Some full-text links are provided for articles included in JSTOR. In addition to articles, Historical Abstracts includes citations to historical books and to abstracts of dissertations. The database contains the entire print backfile from 1954 to the present and is updated monthly.
JSTOR, initially funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, consists of more than a hundred journal titles in various fields, including Language and Literature and Latin American Studies. JSTOR allows for browsing as well as searching and viewing articles, and for printing or downloading text. Examples of journals of interest: Hispanic American Historical Review, Journal of Latin American Studies, Latin American Perspectives, Latin American Research Review, MLN (Modern Language Notes).
Project Muse intends to provide networked access to the full text of more than 100 scholarly journals published by several university presses in the humanities, social sciences, and mathematics. Examples of journals of interest: America, Hispanic American Historical Review, Latin American Music, Nepantla, Criticism, MLN (Modern Language Notes), MLQ: Modern Language Quarterly.
Compludoc: Base de datos de articulos de revistas
From the Biblioteca de la Universidad Complutense, Madrid, this resource allows for searching in and browsing tables of contents for over 1300 journals in the humanities, social sciences, sciences and health sciences owned by the library. Searches by keyword must be accompanied by selecting a database (humanities, social sciences, etc.)
[*Note: the default is set to search for articles in the last month only. Be sure to uncheck that box on the main screen (before selecting the "baso de datos") if you wish to search the entire database].
Handbook of Latin American Studies (HLAS)
The introduction to HLAS states that it is a “bibliography on Latin America consisting of works selected and annotated by scholars.” Edited by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress, the multidisciplinary Handbook alternates annually between the social sciences and the humanities. Each year, more than 130 academics from around the world choose over 5,000 works for inclusion in the Handbook. Continuously published since 1935, the Handbook offers Latin Americanists an essential guide to available resources. The library also owns the print and CD-ROM versions of HLAS.
Arts & Humanities Citation Index
Arts & Humanities Citation Index, published by the Institute
for Scientific Information (ISI), is a multidisciplinary database covering
the journal literature of the arts and humanities. It indexes 1,400 of
the world's leading arts and humanities journals, as well as covering
individually selected, relevant items from over 7,000 major science and
social science journals. Because the information stored about each article
includes the article's cited reference list (often called its bibliography),
you can also search the databases for articles that cite a known author
or work.

Iter
Iter, meaning 'a journey' or 'a path' in Latin, is intended to increase access to all published materials pertaining to the Renaissance (1300-1700) and, eventually, to the Middle Ages (400-1500), by creating online bibliographies.
- The Journals Bibliography, Iter's first searchable Web-based service, presently contains more than 100,000 records based on secondary material published in over 200 journals from 1700 to the present. The bibliography will gradually expand to provide full descriptions, with subject access, to materials from entire runs of journals in many languages.
- The Monographs Bibliography and the Iter Italicum by P.O.
Kristeller, originally published by Brill in 6 vols. between 1963-1992,
are not yet available.
Using Iter: The Journals Bibliography is the only service available. To search it, you must first choose Select Database>> Journals Bibliography>> then click on Connect to Journals Bibliography.
