1. Introduction
This guide, listing sources predominantly for the study of Spanish literature, is designed for graduate students who are preparing for the general examinations. Presented here is a selective suite of sources and research strategies. Acknowledging that many other sources may be considered useful to the reader and scholar of Spanish literature, the selection here is intended to offer a manageable list of contextual literary sources, mostly published in the past 20 years, that contribute to an overall knowledge of the field and the organization of the literature in the field. Included here are literature surveys, subject dictionaries, bibliographies and bibliographical guides, and literary histories. In addition, sections on general sources on literary theory and criticism, dissertations and citation have been compiled.
Annotations are descriptive and intended to provide overviews of contents where useful, and the intent, scope and purpose of the work, where relevant.
Some reference sources cover both peninsular Spanish and Spanish American literature. Sources that fall into this category will be listed in this guide and in the companion guide, Latin American Literature: A Guide for the General Examinations.
