The World Biographical Information System (WBIS) includes the full text online or on microfiche of entries from thousands of biographical dictionaries. Most of the microfiche Biographical Archives are indexed in the WBIS even if full text is currently unavailable. The microfiche archives are gradually being converted to digital form (see table for current availability). Each national/regional Archive on microfiche includes articles in alphabetical order by biographee. Several of the microfiche Archives comprise two or more A-Z series. The microfiches and the printed indexes are available in Widener Library's Atkins Reference Services room (on the 2nd floor). A reader/printer is available.
List of the sources included in each archive is available on the Saur web site when an individual title is selected from the menu on the left of the page.
Indexing:
The World Biographical Information System (WBIS) indexes most of the Biographical Archives. Some of the Biographical Archives on microfiche are also indexed in printed indexes located in the Widener Reference Services room. The WBIS and the print indexes give full references to the print sources, which may then be searched in HOLLIS if you prefer the books to the microfiche. Unindexed archives must be searched directly on the microfiche. Details of indexing by archive.
Each index entry includes the following searchable fields: Name, Gender, Period, Birth Year, Death Year, Year Cited, Occupation, Source, Country.
