Introduction
This guide will assist Harvard researchers to create a personal database of citations, abstracts, images, and other materials in electronic form, and to integrate these sources into papers, articles, or bibliographies written with MS Word and other word processors using RefWorks citation management software.
Access to RefWorks is provided through E-Research@Harvard Libraries and is limited to users with a valid Harvard ID/PIN. Researchers who are considering converting from EndNote to RefWorks or are still deciding on a citation management solution may want to consult the RefWorks or EndNote? section of this guide.
RefWorks users leaving
Harvard have several options for saving or converting
data. Please consult the Leaving Harvard? What to
do... section
of this guide.
New! Attach files to your RefWorks records!
You can now attach PDF articles, Word documents, JPEG images, and more to a RefWorks record. Here’s how:

A few things to remember:
- There is no limit to the number of attachments per record, but each attachment can be no more than 5 MB.
- Each RefWorks account has a 200 MB limit for attachments.
