9. Audio/Visual: Photos, Images, Films, Comic Books, and Music

Introduction

The following guides, resources, and HOLLIS links may be helpful in finding audio and/or visual materials on Korea held at Harvard or elsewhere. This is not a comprehensive list.

Please note that many relevant materials may only be in print or may not be included in online catalogs. For more thorough information about resources and holdings at specific libraries and collections, please consult relevant staff.

For Harvard-Yenching Library, please contact Mikyung Kang, Librarian for the Korean Collection. Raymond Lum, Librarian for the Western-languages Collection, is the primary contact for photographic collections.

At the Fine Arts Library, Nanni Deng is the Asian Art Bibliographer.

Widener Library and the Harvard Film Archive (HFA) also have some holdings of Korean films. HFA holdings may not be findable yet in HOLLIS; please contact HFA staff for more information.

Loeb Music Library collects not only traditional Korean music in its Archive of World Music but also recordings of music performed in Korea and by Korean artists.

Finding Images of East Asia at Harvard and Beyond
Overview of East Asia-related photographs and other visual resources held at Harvard and elsewhere. The focus is primarily on historical photographs, although information on other types of images is included selectively.

Photographica : Research Guide for Photography@Harvard
Introduces a wide range of resources for photographs available at Harvard and elsewhere. Includes databases, web sites, print reference tools, exhibition information, course listings, and much else.

Introductory Guide to Research in History of Art & Architecture
These selected resources provide a basis for electronic research on topics in the history of art and architecture. While electronic resources have simplified some aspects of research in this discipline, such as searching many years of periodical literature indexes simultaneously, other important research resources are available only in printed form.

VIA (Visual Information Access)
Union catalog of visual resources at Harvard, focusing on artistic and cultural materials.
Note: All searches for East Asian terms must be entered in romanization.

A Directory of Photographs at Harvard
Provides descriptions of photographic holdings at institutions across Harvard, including many on East Asia.

This comprehensive database provides information about Korean movies from the 1910s to the present. Search and browse by title, keyword, name, and year of production.
