The list below provides information about major newspapers and newspaper sites. It is not a comprehensive list of Korean newspapers nor of holdings of Korean newspapers at Harvard. For more information on specific newspaper holdings at Harvard, please contact Mikyung Kang, Librarian for the Korean Collection, or the Harvard-Yenching reference desk.


Online / Electronic Full-text Newspapers

Back issues of the following newspapers are available online or in CD-ROM format. Please note that for most newspapers, only a small part of past issues is available in online or electronic format. Those newspapers available via Lexis-Nexis or Factiva.com are the English-language versions only.

National Institute of Korean History -- Newspapers 국사편찬위원회
NIHK provides image reproductions of a number of historical Korean newspapers. These may be browsed by date. Please note that Innovative iBrowser must be installed to view the newspapers; a link to the download is also available on the help page. For more information on materials available from NIHK, please see the entry on Korean History Database 국사데이터베이스 under full-text databases.

Korea Integrated News Database System (KINDS)
The most comprehensive full-text archive (1990-current) for Korean news, operated by the Korea Press Foundation. Contents include major, local, internet, and industry newspapers, magazines, and TV reports since 1990. These are fully searchable and available in full-text online. Four major daily newspapers—Kyŏnghyang 京鄉, Tonga 東亞, Sŏul 서울, and Han’guk 한국(1960 to 1989) are provided in pdf format, as are two newspapers dating from the period of Japanese rule—Tongnip sinmun 獨立新聞 독립신문 and Taehan maeil sinbo 大韓每日新報 대한매일신보.

Online access to full image reproductions in pdf format of an official Japanese-language newspaper from colonial-period Korea. These may be printed or saved. The online version allows browsing by daily paper. The interface is in Korean, and the print version is held in the Korean section of Harvard-Yenching Library.

Korean News 조선통신
Daily news in Korean and English from the Korean Central News Agency of the DPRK, operated by the Korea News Service in Tokyo. Past news articles since 1998 are available. A summary of Nodong Sinmun (로동신문) is also provided. Past summaries are archived since November 2002.

Finding Korean newspapers at Harvard and beyond

Finding newspapers in HOLLIS
Korean-language newspapers at Harvard are primarily held by Harvard-Yenching Library. To see a list of some of these newspapers in HOLLIS, try running this search:

HOLLIS list of Korean-language newspapers

This produces a list of materials whose format is marked "newspaper." Please note that this does not include all holdings, especially those which have been reprinted in book format. To search more broadly, try variations on the following strategy:

  1. Go to the Journal Titles tab in HOLLIS.
  2. Choose Expanded Search.
  3. Enter newspaper-related terms for "Keyword Anywhere" searches, such as sinmun OR 신문 OR 新聞.
  4. Limit language to Korean, or place of publication to a Korean city (e.g. Sŏul 서울.
  5. Click on Search.

Newspapers at Widener Library
Widener Library also collects newspapers published in Asia, primarily those published in Western-languages. You can search their newspaper holdings on microfilm by city and country of publication.

Newspaper databases
General news databases such as Factiva.com and LexisNexis Academic are increasingly including newspapers from Asia. Although the majority of these are still English-language Asian newspapers, holdings in Asian languages are becoming more common.

Factiva.com (Harvard ID/PIN required)
To see a list of Korean publications in Factiva.com, try the following:

  1. Click on Source.
  2. From the Select Source Category drop-down menu, choose Publications - By Region (you may view by language by choosing Publications - By Language. At the moment, Factiva.com only holds English-language publications from Korea).
  3. Click on the + icon next to Asia.
  4. Click on the + icon next to Eastern Asian Countries.
  5. Click on the + icon next to North Korea or South Korea.

LexisNexis Academic (Harvard ID/PIN required)
To see a list of Korean publications in LexisNexis Academic, try the following:

  1. Choose World News from the Step One: Select a news category drop-down menu.
  2. Choose Asia/Pacific News Sources the Step Two: select a news source drop-down menu.
  3. Click on Source List to see browse titles from that area.

World News Connection (Harvard ID/PIN required)
Coverage: June 1994 - present
World News Connection provides online access to full text English translations of current non-U.S. media sources, including Korea. The material is obtained from non-U.S. open-source political speeches, television programs, radio broadcasts, newspaper articles, periodicals, and books. It focuses primarily on military, political, environmental, scientific, technical, and socioeconomic issues and events. Coverage for earlier years, along with relevant indexes, are available (mostly in microform) for the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS, 1941-) and JPRS (Joint Publications Research Service, 1957-) in Government Documents/Microforms in Lamont. Using the indexes can be challenging, so you may wish to set up an appointment with reference staff (617-495-2479).

Ethnic Newswatch (Harvard ID/PIN required)
A full-text database of the newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press in the United States. Currently, it includes the Korea Times English-language edition from 1994-2001.

To browse a list of publications in Ethnic Newswatch:

  1. Click on the Publications tab.
  2. Enter a search term (e.g. Korea*, Asia* - the asterisk lets you search for different forms of the word) to search the list of titles.
  3. Alternately, you may browse by letter.

Center for Research Libraries (CRL) - Foreign Newspapers
Center for Research Libraries (CRL) - U. S. Ethnic Newspapers
The Center for Research Libraries collects a range of foreign and U. S. ethnic newspapers on microfilm. Affiliates of member libraries may borrow these films through Interlibrary Loan. Their website allows you to search for lists of publications by a variety of criteria, including language, region or ethnic group.

Searching is in romanization only.

  1. Click on the Publications tab.
  2. Enter a search term (e.g. Korea*, Asia* - the asterisk lets you search for different forms of the word) to search the list of titles.
  3. Alternately, you may browse by letter.
