Searching the HOLLIS (Harvard OnLine Library Information System) Catalog

Search Tips & Print/Send/Save

This section provides researchers with a number of tips for improving their HOLLIS searching. It also illustrates how the Print/Send/Save feature in HOLLIS works.

HOLLIS Search Tips

  • Use a truncation symbol "?" at the end of a word root to get more results ("?" is the truncation sign in HOLLIS): Example: "postmodern?" This will ensure that your results will include not only the keyword "postmodern," but also "postmodernism," "postmodernist," etc.

  • Put quotes ( " " ) around words to search them as a phrase: a keyword search for "forest biodiversity" will bring back better results than a search for forest biodiversity. This is a good technique to narrow a search that has returned too many results.

  • When you find a useful book in HOLLIS click on any of the Subjects listed on the screen to find more books on that topic. As soon as you click on one of these subject headings, HOLLIS will perform a search and pull up all records that contain that subject heading.

Print/Save/Send Options

  • Users may print, save, or email themselves selected HOLLIS records. From your Results List, mark the records you want by clicking the box next to each record. A "Select All" option is also available just above the results list. When you have selected all of the records you want, click on the Print/Save/Send box (see below). Then, follow the instructions on the next page for each function. You can also perform these functions for an individual HOLLIS record (see below).
