    1. Do a Keywords anywhere search when you’re searching for books on a topic, or don’t know the author’s name, or don't have the exact beginning of a book title.

    2. Do a Title beginning with... search if you know the exact beginning of a book title. NOTE WELL: Omit articles at the beginning of titles. Search "horse whisperer" rather than "the horse whisperer".

    3. Do an Author search if you know the author's name. Put the last name first, then the first name. Example: "Brookner Anita"

    Expanded Search

You may find it even more useful to do Keyword searches in the Expanded Search portion of HOLLIS (click on Expanded Search at the top of the screen to get there). Why?

    By using an Expanded Search

    • you can limit searches to a specific format (audio, manuscripts, maps, visual, etc.)
    • you can limit searches to items in specific languages
    • you can limit searches to find items in a specific library (under "Location")
    • you can limit searches to items published in a specific year or range of years

Do a keyword search if you are…

    • looking for a topic & don't know the exact Library of Congress subject heading:
      "food culture economics"
    • looking for a specific book and know the topic but not the exact title:
      "culture poetics paris"
    • looking for a specific work & know the author's last name & what it’s about:
      "mctaggart force"
    • looking for two or more authors or editors of a work (and you know the last names):
      "strunk and white"
