This guide provides a set of resources useful for introductory undergraduate research in Environmental Research at the Cabot Science Library. This list is not intended to be exhaustive or comprehensive. Cabot Library holds the general science collections for the university; additional resources are available at the Environmental Research Center. Please consult the HOLLIS catalog and the E-Research @ Harvard site for all of Harvard’s holdings.

Journals
Cabot Science Library has a large collection of current journals on the main floor of the library. We have couches and arm chairs available for comfortable browsing of the collection. Older issues can be found in the basement. For access to electronic copies of journals, look up the journal’s title in the HOLLIS catalog, where an internet link will be available if Harvard owns a subscription. Or you may use the E-Journals list available through the E-Research @ Harvard site. To locate individual articles within the journals, use one of the databases listed in this guide (individual articles are not available in the catalog or the e-journal list).
Databases for Journal Articles
Environment Abstracts (CD-ROM only) (1975-2002)
Use it in the Reference area of the Cabot Science Library (obtain CDs at the Reference Desk); or in Loeb Design Library (1984-). This comprehensive international database covers 800 English-language scientific journals, conference proceedings, reports, etc.
Environmental Issues and Policy Index (1973-)

Science Citation Index is a multidisciplinary science journals database, with searchable author abstracts; covers 5,700 major journals in >150 scientific disciplines; unique Citation Search searches through articles’ bibliographies by author.
Pollution Abstracts (1981-)

Pollution Abstracts provides access to scientific research and government policies, from the standpoints of atmosphere, emissions, mathematical models, effects on people and animals, and envir’tal action in response to global pollution issues.
Other journal article databases include:
PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service) (1915-), describes public policy literature, with emphasis on contemporary issues and the making and evaluating of public policy; CAB Abstracts (1910-), covers agriculture, natural resource management and conservation, and related human health; TOXNET, a cluster of databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related areas; Meteorological and Geoastrophysical Abstracts (1974-), covers fields of meteorology, climatology, atmospheric chemistry and physics, physical oceanography, hydrology, glaciology, and related sciences; ASFA 3: Aquatic Pollution and Environmental Quality (1990-), a subset of the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts, it is devoted to research and policy on marine and aquatic pollution, etc.
