There are many subject encyclopedias and dictionaries in the Reference Collections of the libraries; please ask a reference librarian for guidance in finding one that suits your needs. These are just a few available on-line, offered as points of departure.
Encyclopedia Britannica - the current electronic edition
The 11th edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica is in Widener's Loker Reading Room (RR 2003.2) and in many other Harvard libraries.
Contains dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press. It is a fully-indexed, cross-searchable database of these books. A broad subject range from titles in the Oxford Companions Series is available, as well as the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.
