This guide is intended to help juniors in tutorial and senior thesis writers in Harvard's Department of English and American Literature and Language find their way into the print and digital collections of Harvard's libraries.
It includes contextual resources to offer overview and discussion of genres, theory, movements, and historical periods. It links to indexes and to journals, to identify relevant criticism of authors and texts.
It also includes some resources from other disciplines, so that students can explore the fields of art, music, film, theatre, history, anthropology, religion, and philosophy as they relate to their reading.
But, it is selective and only a place to begin,
or to return for guidance. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you'd
like guidance or assistance with your research.
1. Using the Harvard Libraries Web Portal and the HCL Web
Harvard Libraries is the university libraries' research web portal. HCL Web is the portal of the libraries in the Harvard College Library.
From these sites, you can link to our library catalogs and to the catalogs of other research libraries, as well as to e-journals, e-texts, and to reference sources, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, etc.

HCL Web includes information on library
hours, collections, and services, as well as research
guides covering a wide range of subjects.
Harvard Libraries web portal includes information on libraries of other faculties (Schools of Business, Law, Medicine, Education, etc.) together with research guides, links to HOLLIS, VIA, and OASIS and other library digital collections and projects. It also hosts E-Research.
E-Research: This part of the Harvard Libraries portal allows you to identify and connect to e-resources, and offers space for users to save links to frequently used e-resources and journals. For more information, read Getting Started. To explore the electronic resources available, go to Find E-Resources. You can search for particular titles (If you are unsure of the exact title, select the "Contains" button.) or browse through a list of e-resources by subject. (Select the Subject or Keyword tab.)
VIA - is a searchable union catalog of visual resources at Harvard. It includes information about slides, photographs, objects and artifacts in the university's libraries, museums and archives.
OASIS - is a searchable union catalog of finding aids for archival and manuscript collections at Harvard repositories, which include letters, diaries, photographs and other unique material held by libraries across the university.
