6. Diacritics

Endote 8 and 9 Users: The HOLLIS Connection file, described in the Endnote Meets HOLLIS section of this guide allows users to import HOLLIS records into Endnote in Unicode (UTF-8) format so that diacritics will appear properly.

Note: Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) characters still present a challenge for Endnote users. Also, Endnote 8 and 9 are not able to cope with right-to-left scripts (such as Hebrew and Arabic).

Special characters (diacritics) can be entered into EndNote 8 or 9 by:
1. Typing the character on the keyboard.
2. Copying the character from another program, and paste it into your EndNote library.
3. Using the Character Map program supplied with Windows for this purpose.

Endnote 7 and Earlier Versions
Earlier versions of Endnote do not support the Unicode character set and so cannot correctly import diacritics. When connecting to the HOLLIS Z39.50 server with a Z39.50 client such as EndNote, the bibliographic records are translated from Unicode to the Latin-1 character set. The conversion eliminates extraneous characters that result from the clients’ inability to display Unicode.

One "work around" to importing diacritics in earlier versions of Endnote is to:
1. Open the records in a browser window so that they correctly display in Unicode (UTF8)
2. Highlight all of the text and copy/paste it into a text file.
3. Import the records into Endnote from the text file using the HarvardMARC filter (see instructions above).
