5. US Data Resources

The following resources provide economics data for the United States.

Census CD Collection (Geolytics, Inc.)
Research Services in Lamont, Level B
Census CD 2000 There are a number of Census 2000 CD-Roms available including data from the long and short forms and redistricting information.

Census CD 1990 Summary tape files 3A, 3B, 3C, and 3D from the 1990 U.S. Census (long-form questionnaire), down to Census Block group. Added estimates (1997) and projections (2002) on demographic and consumer spending for block groups, zip codes, tracts, counties and states. Includes county time-series data on crime, agriculture, industry, employment, etc.

Census CD Neighborhood Change Database, 1970-2000 The Neighborhood Cahnge database provides researchers with census data from the 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000 censuses. These data has been normalized so that they are comparable across years.

Fedstats (U.S. Census Bureau)
This website contains links to the federal agencies that collect data, and provides direct access to the data by topic and data by geography. Data on the site is collected by over 100 federal agencies and is searchable by geography, agency or subject. Data available at the site includes trade, education, health care, agriculture, aviation, and energy. The site also has a link “MapStats” that provides data (population, housing, labor force, retail sales, etc.) for states, congressional districts, and federal judicial districts.

Global Financial Database (Global Financial Data)
Spreadsheet data on stock markets from 1690, exchange rates from 1590, interest rates from 1700, commodities from 1500, inflation from 1264, and more.

Historical Statistics of the United States (Cambridge University Press)
Standard source of quantitative indicators of United States history; includes over 12,500 time series in addition to descriptive text.

Lexis-Nexis Statistical (formerly Statistical Universe) (Lexis-Nexis)
Bibliographic database which indexes and abstracts the statistical content of selected United States government publications (ASI, 1973--), state government publications, business and association publications (SRI, 1980-), and international inter-governmental sources (IIS). Abstracts include a publication's statistical content, primary bibliographic information, and hypertext links where the publications may be viewed, downloaded, and accessed. Some full-text is available electronically (GIF, PDF, CSV, Excel). All publications are available in microfiche in Research Services in Lamont, Level B.

Regional Economic Accounts (U.S. Department of Commerce)
Data on personal income and earnings, employment, county economic profiles, farm income and production expenses, summaries of economic conditions, etc. for the U.S., states, metropolitan areas, and counties.

State and Local Personal Income (U.S. Department of Commerce)
Personal income data for 1948-2007; annual estimates for the United States, regions, and all states by major source; total and per capita personal income; total and per capita disposable personal income; earnings, wage and salary disbursements, full- and part-time employment, and wage and salary employment by two-digit Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) industry.

TableBase (Responsive Database Services)
TableBase provides data in a tabular format. TableBase collects data from over 1000 publications, including privately published statistical annuals, trade associations, government agencies, non-profit research groups, and industry reports prepared by investment research groups. The data that is available includes market share, company and brand rankings, industry and product forecasts, production and consumption statistics, imports and exports, usage and capacity, number of users/outlets, trends and demographics.

US Statistical Abstract (U.S. Census Bureau)
The Statistical Abstract or “national data book” includes data for the US on population, education, labor force, agriculture, the criminal justice system, elections and local and state government finances. The Statistical Abstract is available online from 1995-2007. Some of the tables contain data as far back as 1790.

Social Explorer
Presents historical census data for the United States through the use of interactive maps and reports. Currently provides access to data from 1790 to 2000 at census tract, county, state and national level.
