3. Econlit

EconLit is a comprehensive indexed bibliography with selected abstracts of the world's economic literature, produced by the American Economic Association. It includes coverage of over 600 journals as well as articles in collective volumes (essays, proceedings, etc.), book reviews, dissertations, and working papers from the Cambridge University Press' Abstracts of Working Papers in Economics.

 


Access to EconLit

EconLit is available online through the Harvard Libraries homepage (http://lib.harvard.edu/). Select "E-Research" and then "Find E-Resources" from the top of the page. You can then search for "EconLit" by title. It is also accessible from the "Quick jump to selected resources" box.

Search Strategies

  • Select "Advanced Search" at the top of the screen.
  • Type the search terms for your topic in the boxes provided. You can use the boolean logic "or," "and," and "not." It is possible to add or remove rows for search terms.
  • Select the field (author, title, journal, etc.) you wish to search from the pull down menus at the end of each row.
  • Click on "Search tips" for additional information about proximity and wildcard searching.
  • Define limits for your search including a date range and journal articles only.
  • Select the format (short, full, full-no references or custom) you are interested in for your results using the pull down menu in the box next to "Show."
  • Click on the "Search" button once you have made all of your selections.
  • Use the Search Tools to refine your search. You can combine searches and review your search history. The "Search History" section lets you edit, save, delete or run searches.
  • Use the thesaurus to browse for search terms.
  • Use the indexes to search for author and journal names and publication types.
  • Click on "Help and Support" in the upper right-hand corner of the screen if you need more information on any of the searching features or ask a reference librarian.

Viewing Results

  • Click on the appropriate tab to display all of the results or only the ones from specific types of resources - journals, peer-reviewed journals, web sites or books.
  • Click on "Find it @ Harvard" to locate an electronic or paper copy of the article if it is available at Harvard. You will be able to either link electronically to the journal or check the HOLLIS catalog for a paper copy.
  • Click on "view record" to see the complete record.

Managing Results

  • Select the records you are interested in by clicking in the box next to the record in your results list and then click on the "save, print, email" link at the top of the screen to reach the screen below to manage your results. It is also possible to click on the "RefWorks" link to export your results to the HOLLIS E-resource RefWorks.
  • Click on the appropriate button to save, print, email or export your results.
  • Create a bibliography using "QuickBib." Use the pull-down menu to select a bibliographic style.
  • Click on "Return to Results" to return to your results list.
