Linking to Harvard Library E-Resources

2. Linking to Journals & Articles

Summer 2008 Update: These article linking instructions have been recently updated to accommodate changes to a new proxy server, "ezp-prod1.hul". Any links that were created with former “ezp” proxy servers in the past should continue working.

Persistent links can be built with the prefix:

http://ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/login?url=

with the URL for the article added. Please see the table of individual resources for specific instructions for each resource.

Steps to Linking to Online Journal Articles

1. Use the Citation Linker to find out if a full-text version of an article is available

2. Identify the database or publisher offering the article (for example, EBSCO or Oxford Journals Online)

3. Check the table below (Link Types for Resources) to find the best link type for the e-resource you are using

4. Click on the link type in the table below for detailed instructions on how to build the link.

Browser URL
The URL in the browser for an article or abstract will be a persistent link for many resources:

CSA Full-Text Links
If the DOI link does not work, go to the article abstract, click on “Save, Print, Email”, choose “Print Preview” and copy the “Full-Text Link”.

Digital Object Identifier (DOI)-based links
A DOI is an ID number assigned to a specific article and is often included in an article citation:
Nature 411, 795-798 (14 June 2001) | doi: 10.1038/35081069

If the article has a DOI, researchers can use a base URL with the DOI...

http://ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/[ DOI string ]?nosfx=y

...to link to the article.

The final persistent link would look like this:

http://ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/35081069?nosfx=y

Users can also link to the Citation Linker with a DOI, so that all online versions of the article will be listed.
For this link, add this prefix before the DOI: http://dx.doi.org.ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/[ DOI string ]

Hein Online Links
For a Hein Online link, you will need to add a few elements to this base URL:

http://heinonline.org.ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/{journal title code and volume number}/&collection=journals&page={first page number}

To find the journal title code, check the publishers listing: http://heinonline.org.ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/HOL/CSV.csv

Add the title code and the volume number. For example, to build a URL for this citation...

Nelson, Blake. “The Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines: The Effects of Determinate Sentencing on Disparities in Sentencing Decisions.“ Law and Inequality 10 Law & Ineq. 217 (1991-1992)

...the title code “lieq” and the volume number 10 are added below:

http://heinonline.org.ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/lieq10/&collection=journals&page={first page number}

To complete the link, the first page number of the article is added to the URL

http://heinonline.org.ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/lieq10&collection=journals&page=217

Ingenta OpenURL

Go to the article record and click on “Linking Options” in the left side menu.  Right click on “open URL”.  Go to properties in the menu that pops up, then copy the URL address.  This Open URL can be used as an Ingenta link.

JSTOR Linking Tool
JSTOR links can be created using the JSTOR Citation Linking Tool.

LexisNexis Article Links

Note: LexisNexis has an updated platform and previous links created as “Search URLs” need to be updated with the article-level links described here. Consult the LexisNexis API URL Terms of Use for additional linking instructions.

For LexisNexis, you can now build a URL that links directly to an article. Begin with the following base URL:

http://www.lexisnexis.com.ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/us/lnacademic/api/version1/sr?shr=t&csi={Article Link CSI number}&sr={search terms}+AND+{publication date}

To the base URL, you will need to add:

    • the Article Link CSI number for the journal or newspaper title
    • search terms, such as the article author, headline, or title
    • the publication date

    Example citation:

    Margolies, Jane. "Turtles Taking Over as the Kings of the Sea." New York Times, 18 Sept. 2005, late final ed.: E3.

    1. To find the Article Link CSI number, check the A-Z List.  All titles available in LexisNexis are listed with an Article Link CSI (please note that this number may be different from the “csi” listed in the first column).

    For this example, the Article Link CSI for “The New York Times” has been added below:

    http://www.lexisnexis.com.ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/us/lnacademic/api/version1/sr?shr=t&csi=6742&sr={search terms}+AND+DATE+IS+{publication date}

    2. For many articles, a search string using a phrase from the article title or headline will be specific enough to link directly to the article.  For newspaper and journal articles, the words from the title will be labeled with the HLEAD prefix, and consecutive words will be joined with a "+".

    For this example, the search terms would be written as: HLEAD(Turtles+Taking+Over)

    The search string is added to the base URL, following the CSI number and &sr:

    http://www.lexisnexis.com.ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/us/lnacademic/api/version1/sr?shr=t&csi=6742&sr=HLEAD(Turtles+Taking+Over)+AND+DATE+IS+{publication date}

    Additional tips for adding search terms:

    • To add words that are not consecutive in the article title, use +AND+ in the search string:

    HLEAD(Turtles+Taking+Over+AND+Seas)

    • Author names can be added with the BYLINE prefix:

                            BYLINE(Margolies)

    • Author and Title search terms can be joined together in the search string:

    &sr=HLEAD(Turtles+Taking+Over+AND+Seas)+AND+BYLINE(Margolies)

    3. To specify a publication date, add the date in one of these formats:
                yyyy
                mm/yyyy
                dd/mm/yyyy

    For our example article, the date could be added like this:
    http://www.lexisnexis.com.ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/us/lnacademic/api/version1/sr?shr=t&csi=6742&sr=HLEAD(Turtles+Taking+Over)+AND+DATE+IS+9/18/2005

    The LexisNexis URL should link to the full text article:

    Link in article citation
    Some resources, such as EBSCO databases, list "persistent" or "stable" links in the article citation or abstract.

    Note: For JSTOR, the Stable URL listed with the article citations in the search results does not contain "ezp" and will not allow students to authenticate with their PINs. Try using the JSTOR Citation Linking Tool or use the browser URL.

    Example of a resource listing a persistent link

    OVID "Jumpstart"
    At the fulltext version of the article, click on “Email Jumpstart: and copy the URL that will appear in the “Comments” field.

    Example: http://ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/login?url=http://gateway.ovid.com/ovidweb.cgi?T=JS&NEWS=N&PAGE=fulltext&AN=00022363-200511000-00008&LSLINK=80&FIGS=full&D=ovft
