7. Socio-Demographic Data

The socio-demographic resources included in this section of the guide provide data on income and wealth; population counts; labor and employment; communication and culture; gender issues and public health. Many of the sites have both English and Japanese interfaces; the Japanese-language version is frequently more comprehensive.

The Japan Institute for Labour policy and Training (English language)
独立行政法人労働政策 研究・研修機構 (Japanese language)
Statistical data and research reports on labor-related issues in Japan and internationally. The Statistics section of the English-language page provides the most recent month of "Main Labor Economic Indicators" in html or Excel format as well as a pdf file of the previous month's report. There are also "Recent Statistical Survey Reports" and "International Comparision of Labour Statistics" for the previous year in html and / or Excel format.

Content is richer on the Japanese-language site. The database データベース page provides links to searchable databases of information, scholarship (dissertations, publications, etc.), and surveys on labor policy issues. For the surveys, summaries of the results are given along with information on who conducted them and where the reports themselves are held. The statistics 統計情報 section includes a wider range of statistical reports.

Laborsta (English language)
The International Labour Organization publishes data related to employment and labour issues for countries around the world. The LABORSTA collection of databases includes Yearly (data from 1945-present focusing on employment by industry, occupation and level of education; hours of work; wages; strikes and lockouts); Periodical (monthly data from 1976-present; focusing on employment and unemployment; hours of work; wages and consumer pricing); October Inquiry (data from 1983-present focusing on wages and hours of work by occupation and retail prices of food); Segregat (data from 1970-2000 focusing on employment by sex by detailed occupation) and several other employment related databases.

National Institute of Population and Social Security Research (English language)
国立社会保 障・人口問題研究所 (Japanese language)
Includes demographic statistics, research papers, and summary reports on surveys about social issues (e.g. marriage, mobility, etc.). The Japanese site has significantly more content. Information is provided primarily in pdf and html formats.

United Nations Common Database (UNCD) (English language) image of a padlock
This database contains data for Japan from 1951-present for most variables. UN Common Database will provide researchers with data relating to population composition and change; households and marital status; income and wealth; tourism and travel; education and learning; health and health services; and social services and welfare. The UN Common Database also publishes country profiles which allow researchers to build thematic reports.

Winet, National Women’s Education Center 国立女性教育会館 女性情報ポータル (Japanese language)
An extensive bibliography, statistics, directory of gender studies courses offered in Japanese universities, links to online resources, etc.

World Development Indicators (English language) image of a padlock
This database contains data for Japan from 1960-present for most variables. Socio-demographic information within the database focuses on population (counts, density and growth); public health; education; income and poverty; labor; environment (land use and utilization); migration; and travel and tourism.

World Health Organization (WHO) (English language)
The World Health Organization Statistical Information System (WHOSIS) website publishes health data relating to burden of disease statistics, health personnel, mortality and population. This site also provides pdf copies of the statistical annex to the World Health Report. For more specific information relating to Japan, please see the WHO website for Japan.

Minryoku 民力CD-ROM 2000 : 1989-2000 HOLLIS record
Documentation Center on Contemporary Japan (Fung Library)
Contains statistical data in the period of 1989 to 2000 for Japan’s population, economy, industry, construction, transportation, communication and culture, etc. Print versions (some with accompanying CD-ROMs) are also available HOLLIS record. The most recent CD-ROM holdings are at the Fung Library (Documentation Center on Contemporary Japan Reference HA1844 .M56).

WISTAT (Women's Indicators and Statistics Database) HOLLIS record
WISTAT is a database published by the United Nations that focuses on current issues and their effect on women. Data is available in ten year increments beginning in 1970. The themes covered on the CD-ROM focus on population; education and learning; reproductive health and reproductive rights; public affairs and political participation; and violence against women.

Yearbook of labour statistics 労働統計年報 HOLLIS record
Annual data from 1967 in Japanese and English from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. An abridged version 労働統計要覧 HOLLIS record is also available Continues the earlier Year book of labor statistics & research 労働統計調査年報 HOLLIS record.
