1. Introduction
This guide was created for Professor Ingrid Monson's class, Literature and Arts B-82: Sayin' Something: Jazz as Sound, Sensibility, and Social Dialogue (Fall 2008). It is intended as a highly selective starter guide for Harvard Libraries resources in jazz. As with any type of research, there are many other sources that should be consulted. Rather than trying to be a comprehensive coverage of jazz sources or history, it is intended to pique students' interest in further exploration of topics on the syllabus.
Performer sections include mainly books and discographies; periodical article searching is covered in section four. For more general music research sources see Online Resources for Music Scholars. To explore online audio resources (in addition to those in course syllabus) please visit our Digital Audio Services, in particular, Naxos Music Library: Jazz. Many recordings are also held in the Loeb Music Library and Lamont Library, Morse Music and Media Center (circulating collections).
Please note that site is under construction. In addition to contributors, special thanks to Edward Komara and Martin Schreiner who contributed valuable ideas and reviewed content.
