Freshman Seminar 33q: Global Pop Music

2. Finding Materials in the HOLLIS Catalog

HOLLIS searching: Try "Keywords anywhere" searching on terms in Basic Search or in Expanded Search (offers more powerful options to combine terms and limit by date, format, language). You can limit format to Books, Scores, Audio Music, Digital, Visual, for example.

Example strings:
"Youssou N’Dour" and "Senegal or Africa"
"Bhangra" and "Brit*"

Subject words sometimes work better than keyword searches; go to Expanded Search and choose Subject Words or in Basic, scroll to "Subject beginning with...". You may also start with keword searching, and click on hyperlinked subject terms in the Hollis records. Author words search can yield recordings by primary artist (ex: Chao, Manu or Susana Baca).

Selected subject term examples:

World Music -- History and Criticism
World Music -- Analysis, Appreciation
World music -- Mali
World music -- Influence -- Bibliography
World beat (Music)
Popular Music -- History and Criticism

Advanced search tips:

  • Put " "around words to search them as a phrase
  • Use ? to truncate search words and search for variant endings: critic?
  • You can go back and "refine" a search that gives you too many result by clicking on the Modify button.
  • Ability to print/save/send search results to yourself
  • When you find a relevant book in HOLLIS click on any Subject headings listed on the screen to find more books on that topic.
  • Consult the Searching the HOLLIS Catalog guide.

Although you will find many materials in English and other languages in the HOLLIS catalog, it is also useful to search other large catalogs such as Worldcat (for North American libraries) and the Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog (KVK) (for European libraries). Books and materials that are not owned by the Harvard Libraries can be requested through HCL Interlibrary Loan.
