Finding Contemporary Reviews

  • LexisNexis Academic (Harvard users)
    • Full text articles from thousands of new sources (1980s-present) such as wire services, Time, Newsweek, New York Times, Boston Globe, Washington Post (all major newspapers). Select the News tab (default); in the "Select Sources" menu, choose "Book, Movie, Music, Play and Video Reviews"; change date default (set for previous 3 months).
  • Academic Search Premier (Harvard users)
    • Also indexes major newspapers such as New York Times (links to full text). Click on "Publications" link to see coverage dates for each title.
  • International Index to Music Periodicals (Harvard users, 1874-present)
    • Click "Select from a list" next to Document Type search box, select options "Performance Reviews (more options: Favorable, Mixed, Unfavorable)".
  • International Index to the Performing Arts (Harvard users, 1864-present)
    • See above
  • JSTOR Music (Harvard users)
    • Limit to reviews; note coverage dates in journals list (many stop at 2000-2001, augment with more current databases).
  • JSTOR Performing Arts (Harvard users)

    • Citations from more than 4,000 journals in the humanities and social sciences from the 18th century to the present; includes some small, local publications.
  • Readers Guide Retrospective (Harvard users, 1890-1982)
    • Includes popular magazines such as the New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Down Beat, Musical America, Vogue, and many more. Note: current coverage of these types of publications are included in LexisNexis, Academic Search Premier, and other indexes listed above.
  • E-Research:  Click on "Find E-resources" – Subject tab – News. Selection includes Historical Newspapers Online, America’s Historical Newspapers,  New York Times (Proquest Historical Newspapers), and more.
