Celtic Languages and Literatures: Library Resources for Students, Faculty, and Researchers

3. Books and Multimedia

There are millions of books in Widener Library's collection. Although you will find something on every topic in the HOLLIS catalog, it's useful to search "union" catalogs (i.e. large catalog databases that include multiple libraries's materials) as well as bibliographies. Books and materials that you don't find in the HOLLIS catalog can be requested through Interlibrary Loan. You may also make a purchase request to ask the library to purchase a copy for the collection. Resources marked with a symbol indicates that users with a Harvard PIN number may access the resources from off-campus.

HOLLIS

HOLLIS, the library catalog of the Harvard University Libraries, contains million of records for books, journals, and other research materials. The database is updated continually as material is ordered, received, and cataloged. (The HOLLIS Catalog is also accessible via the Harvard Libraries site.)

Once in HOLLIS, to search for books on a particular topic, click on Expanded Search, in the menu at the top of the screen. In the Keywords from menu, select Anywhere and enter the words for which you want to search in the search windows.

More Searching Tips:

1. Put " " around words you want to search as a phrase.

2. Use a question mark “?” to find more results in a word search: chronol? (finds chronological, chronologies, chronology, etc.)

3. Once you've found a book in HOLLIS that interests you, click on its subject heading (labeled Subject on the screen) to find other, similar books on the topic.

4. To e-mail search results to yourself or someone else, while you are looking at a record click on Save/E-Mail.
