African Video Collection

Nollywood Videos

Introduction

This guide provides a quick overview of Nigerian video films, popularly known as Nollywood videos and reputed to be the 3rd biggest industry in the world, preceded by U.S. (Hollywood) and India (Bollywood). Nollywood represents a renaissance for Nigeria's movie industry and attracts a growing audience not only within Nigeria, but also all over Africa, Europe and N. America, especially  in the African Diaspora. Nollywood videos are locally produced in Nigeria by Nigerian filmmakers with relatively limited resources and they are creating a phenomenal impact on West African popular culture, rapidly replacing foreign and multi-national media.
In addition to a list of of videos currently held in the Widener Library, the guide will also provide links to related sites containing criticism, reviews and cultural information for further research.
