Programs and Services for Instructors

HCL provides a variety of programs and services designed to complement the teaching and research programs of FAS departments.

Library Liaisons and Research Contacts

The Library Liaison program associates a librarian with an FAS department, academic committee, or program.  Liaisons establish ongoing relationships within departments and collaborate with faculty and instructors on creating and teaching library-related classes.  They meet with students and faculty, provide one-on one consultation, develop course research guides, assist with content for course web sites, and provide general reference services to the department’s faculty and students.

See a list of the current Library Liaisons on this site.  These individuals can arrange for any of the services listed below.

Department chairs or faculty who would like to have a liaison assigned to their area should contact the Associate Librarian for Research and Instruction at 617-495-2401.

Research Contacts are librarians with a subject specialty who are available to consult with students and faculty. See the list of Research Contacts by subject, concentration, language, and region on this site.

Services

Services can be arranged through your department's Library Liaison, a Reserach Contact, or by contacting the Associate Librarian for Research and Instruction at 617-495-2401.

Locating and Linking E-Resources to Course Web Sites

Librarians will help you locate e-resources (full-text articles, databases, images, HOLLIS records) and and link them from your course web site.

In addition you can find detailed directions in an HCL research guided entitled Linking to Harvard Library E-Resources.

Assembling Source Materials for Courses

Librarians will help you find, prepare, and present source materials for your courses. They can help you assess when to put books on reserve and when to create links to full-text articles from the course syllabus or reading list on your course site, and assist with Course Reserves.

In addition you can find detailed directions in an HCL research guided entitled Assembling Course Source Materials

Preparing Course-Related Research Instruction

A librarian will collaborate with you to design a research class that is tailored to the specific goals of your course and which covers the resources you would like your students to use in their research. Library instruction often includes an introduction to research strategies and demonstrations of specific online databases and other research tools. You can also use the Schedule a Class form to begin the process.

Creating Research Guides and Research Sites

Created by College librarians, Research Guides give detailed advice on how to use the libraries to conduct research. Librarians will also collaborate with instructors to create course-specific research guides. You may want to browse through the Guides for Instructors section. Other sections include: guides for first-time library users, guides for subjects and courses, guides for using online research tools, and guides for identifying sources of information.

Research sites are interdisciplinary portals, bringing together information from a wide range of sources. Current sites include classics and medieval studies, film studies, Germanic studies, Renaissance studies, Romance languages and literatures.

Research guides, created by HCL librarians as well as those from other Harvard libraries, can also be found via E-Research.

Consulting One-on-One

Research librarians in any of the HCL libraries will schedule individual consultations with you to collaborate on course needs or with students to assist them in effective use of library resources or to devise strategies for class assigments, theses, dissertations, and other research project.

Students are often unaware of this service, so we encourage you to enlighten them!
