What is RSS and How Does it Work?

RSS stands for Real Simple Syndication, and is a way for you to get information and updates on news, exhibitions and other events at Harvard College Library delivered directly to you. Essentially, RSS works like a newspaper or magazine subscription. Simply subscribe to one of HCL’s 12 RSS “feeds,” and updates will be sent to you via an RSS “reader.”

RSS Readers
RSS readers, sometimes called aggregators, receive and display information from RSS feeds via your Internet browser. Readers can monitor multiple sites and provide updates to all of them in a single place.

Accessing RSS Feeds
Before you can begin receiving information from an RSS feed, however, you must subscribe. Click on any of the feeds below to subscribe to HCL feeds.

To make it easy for people to receive news they are interested in, the HCL Web also includes other ways to access RSS feeds. Links to the RSS page are available on the green “General Info” bar on the HCL home page, the announcements section of each library home page, the HCL News page, and at the bottom of each news story posted on the HCL Web.

Just as it does on hundreds of other sites which include RSS feeds, the orange RSS icon appears in the address bar of your Internet browser on all HCL Web pages. Clicking on the icon will take you directly to the HCL News RSS feed, which includes general news from throughout HCL.

Reading RSS Feeds
While there are many different ways to read RSS feeds, most Internet browsers – including Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 – feature built-in RSS readers. How you subscribe and read the feeds, however, depends on which browser you use.
