Library Showcase Explores Loeb Music Library
January 26, 2009 - Library Showcase is a photo feature that highlights tours of HCL libraries or units organized by the HCL Joint Council. Earlier this month, several staff members toured Loeb Music Library. For upcoming tours, check the HCL Joint Council Excursion Program Web site.

The Library's general collections include books, scores, sound recordings, visual forms, and periodical titles that support research in a wide variety of musical disciplines including historical musicology, music theory, ethnomusicology, composition, and historically informed performance practice. |

The Loeb Music Library stacks. The Library's collection contains approximately 244,000 books and scores. Collection strengths include outstanding holdings in 18th and 19th century instrumental music, 19th century opera, early Western European music in modern editions, and Russian and Ukrainian music of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Current collecting focuses on American vernacular musics including jazz, blues, and rock. Collection development in 20th and 21st century music is also a priority, guided by the world-renowned composition faculty of the Harvard Department of Music. |
The Woodworth Listening Room offers library users a space to listen to the thousands of recordings in the the collections. With listening technology ranging from phonographs to CDs, the room is able to give patrons access to even the rarest recordings in the library's collections.

The Aldrich Reading Room on the first floor has basic reference materials and four research workstations where patrons can view DVDs, listen to recordings and OASIS sound files, as well as access other online library resources. One of the workstations is outfitted with a keyboard and Finale, a music notation program. In an adjacent room, patrons have access to a variety of playback equipment -- turntables, DVD players, etc. |

Donna Guerra is the Curatorial Assistant in the Archive of World Music, a non-circulating special collection of Loeb Music. The Archive is devoted to the acquisition of archival field recordings of musics world-wide as well as to commercial sound recordings, videos, and DVDs of ethnomusicological interest. It includes the James Rubin Collection of Indian Classical Music, the Kay Kaufman Shelemay Collection of Ethiopic Musics, the Sema Vakf Collection of Turkish Classical Music (probably the largest outside of Turkey), and the Laura Boulton Collection of Byzantine and Eastern Orthodox Chant.
