December 6, 2001 -- The eleventh annual Carol Ishimoto Award for Distinguished Service in the Harvard College Library was presented to Jane Ouderkirk, Head of Harvard College Library Technical Services, and Lynda Kresge, Associate Head of Harvard College Library Technical Services.
An endowment, established in 1991 by Carol Ishimoto, former Associate Librarian of Harvard College for Cataloging and Processing, annually provides a cash award and citation for creative professional achievement of a high order. It recognizes a member of the professional staff who has advanced the mission of the College Library through exceptional contributions and leadership.
When HCL Technical Services moved to Central Square, it was a task of extraordinary complexity. However, the move was implemented with great success. Ouderkirk played a key and highly visible role in the transition by using her positive work ethic and good humor to constructively influence all aspects of the project. At the same time she emphasized the critical importance of maintaining operations throughout the library's technical services so there was virtually no interruption in workflow.
Kresge had a significant impact on the reorganization and relocation of HCL Technical Services. Her colleagues cite her thoughtfulness, thoroughness, and dedication as attributes that aided in the success of the move. At the award presentation Nancy Cline, Roy E. Larsen Librarian of Harvard College, quoted from one of the nominations: "Lynda is one of those rare individuals able to conceptualize the future while recognizing the detailed activities required to achieve complex objectives."
Cline remarked, "Presenting this award to both Lynda and Jane recognizes and celebrates their leadership and teamwork -- an unbeatable combination. Their different yet complementary strengths and skills led to exceptional accomplishments for the College Library and have given us a new vision for the valuable work carried out in technical services.
Both Ouderkirk and Kresge were surprised to receive the award. Upon receipt Ouderkirk noted that without the help and hard work of the entire HCL Technical Services staff the success of the past year would not have been possible.
Ouderkirk and Kresge hug each other after learning they both have received the Carol Ishimoto Award for Distinguished Service.
"Jane and Lynda are a wonderful team and this past year has shown how fortunate HCL Technical Services, the College Library, and the University are to have such talented and knowledgeable librarians. This award also reflects upon their dedicated colleagues at HCL Technical Services and all they have accomplished. Congratulations to all," said Jeffrey Horrell, Associate Librarian of Harvard College.
