Overview
Anthropological Literature (ISSN 0190-3373) is a bibliographic index to articles in journals and edited works received by the Tozzer Library. The index contains more than 570,000 entries dating from the early 19th century to the present. Titles indexed: approximately 4370 journals, monographs, and monographic series. Some 700 journals/series titles are currently reviewed for indexing as well as several hundred monographs. About 10,000 new records are added each year in quarterly updates.
Coverage includes core anthropology and archaeology journals as well as interdisciplinary resources. Major topics include social and cultural anthropology, Old and New World archaeology, biological and physical anthropology. Subject areas include anthropological perspectives on economics, ethnology, folklore, human evolution, linguistics, material culture, medicine, museum studies, primatology, psychology, religion, visual studies, zooarchaeology, as well as other related subjects, emphasizing Mesoamerican, Native American, and Andean archaeology and ethnology.
Anthropological Literature indexes articles in Romance languages, English, German and Slavic languages (titles transliterated from Cyrillic), and in Asian language journal articles, if there are summaries in one of the indexed languages. More than 50 languages are represented.
Accessing the Database
Connect to the online database Anthropological Literature. Database access is limited to Harvard users only. A Harvard ID and University PIN is required. Non-Harvard users should see Subscription Information.
Anthropological Literature and FIND IT @ Harvard
Harvard users will find Anthropological Literature, and many other online bibliographic tools, enhanced with SFX citation-linker. This is an application which, under the name "Find It @ Harvard," allows direct links from bibliographic citations in one resource to the full text of the article in another. Because access to online resources is generally governed by subscription, SFX is entirely locally specific: only those full-text resources that Harvard currently may access will be available.
The links are governed by the context; in most cases, clicking on the "Find It" button next to a citation in Anthropological Literature will link to the full text. Some journals, however, only permit linking to their home page, from which one has to select the volume, issue, and article. In still other cases, either there is no full-text available online, or Harvard does not have access to it. The "Find It" button will then link users to the HOLLIS catalog to locate paper copies of the journal at Harvard.
In many cases, online full-text is a byproduct of electronic production of journals—so often only recent years are available. However, because Project JSTOR now includes, among other sources, long runs of journals like American Anthropologist, Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, and Current Anthropology, older articles will often be available. JSTOR excludes the most recent years, but we may have separate access to those issues from the publisher.
Users outside Harvard will only have access to SFX if their institution both subscribes to Anthropological Literature and also has implemented SFX (or an equivalent application) to link to such full-text resources as that institution may access.

The first list includes journals and monograph series currently reviewed for indexing in Anthropological Literature. The second list shows edited works included in Anthropological Literature from 1984–2005. The third list includes subject headings used by Anthropological Literature that augment the official Library of Congress subject headings. We review the contents continually, and your comments are welcome.
