Harvard Maps Collection
Getting Started at the Map Collection
Although some maps, atlases, and geospatial information can be found in the HOLLIS catalog, users are encouraged to visit or contact the Map Collection as only a small percentage of our materials are currently available via HOLLIS. While the stacks are closed and the collection is not available for browsing, personalized reference service is always available for users visiting or contacting the collection.
All researchers must register for a Special Collections Request Account. Patrons can register online by going to the Special Collections Request Account. For more information see Access to Special Collections.
Finding Atlases and Reference Books
Atlases and reference books may be found in HOLLIS by searching for their author, title, or subject heading, i.e. Maps-Bibliography-Catalogs. Most users are often unaware of map authors or their exact title. However, users looking for a particular geographical area can locate materials by searching for the name of the state or country. For example: Maine – Maps, or France – Maps.
Finding Digital Images
The Map Collection is capturing an increasing number of its historical maps digitally, making them available for research purposes. Users can identify the different categories of digital images by searching the Harvard Map Collection Digital Maps Virtual Collection. This collection can be searched by title, author, subject or genre and every result will include a link to an on-line image.
A variety of options are available for print and digital reproductions.
