Packard Humanities Institute Collection

The Packard Humanities Institute (PHI) Music Collection contains over 650 scores and books, most of them rare first and early editions from the 18th and 19th centuries. Handel, Rameau, Gluck, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Verdi, Massenet, and Wagner are among the most well represented composers, but there are also a number of items from the 17th century and the first third of the 20th century. The majority of the items are scores but there are also a number of libretti and books. Other particular strengths of the collection are 18th and 19th century opera and this collection’s first edition of Schuberts, which constitutes the largest such collection in the world outside of Vienna.

The Packard Humanities Institute acquired the collection in 1999 and placed it on deposit at the Eda Kuhn Loeb Music Library at Harvard University where it is actively consulted as a rich resource for teaching and scholarship in the Music Department.
