Lamont Library
Rules for Using Archival Materials
The following rules have been established to provide access to our collections while ensuring their preservation. By signing the Application for Examination of Collections, which the curator will have prepared in advance of the visit, readers agree to observe the following regulations:
- New readers register with the guard desk at the Lamont Library entrance, providing photo identification.
- No food or drink may be consumed in Lamont Library.
- Do not use pens while using the collections; pencils are available upon request. We encourage the use of personal computers; the library has wireless connectivity and there are power outlets throughout the library.
- Readers interested in photocopies should ask the Archivist for complete details.
- All materials must be returned to the shelf prior to closing and no later than 4:45 pm.
- Archival materials do not circulate and must not leave the library. Please show the contents of your bag to the library guard on duty upon leaving the library.
- Due to their age and declining nature, audiovisual materials are available on a restricted basis and only if archival service masters have been previously made.
- Some donors may have placed restrictions on specific portions of their collections. In most cases, this will be noted in the finding aid. Permission to use that portion of materials must generally be received from the donor. Such restrictions are typically noted in the completed finding aid in OASIS. Please consult the Archives via e-mail or phone at 617-496-6158 for detailed information.
- Readers agree to follow the Handling Guidelines established by the archives in the interest of preserving materials for future research.
