HWL. Self-portrait from his Journal in Spain, 1827.

Longfellow Papers MS Am 1340 (172). Houghton Library.

Astride his horse on the road from Malaga to Granada, Longfellow emulates his hero Lord Byron. The caption comes from the first Canto of Lord Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812-1818), a poem about a world-weary man seeking rejuvenation in foreign travel: "To horse-to horse-he quits, forever quits / A scene of peace though soothing to the soul."
