Valentine Hugo (née Valentine Gross) made a number of portraits of Ballets Russes dancers, including this group of six sketches showing Tamara Karsavina, Ludmilla Schollar, and Vaslav Nijinsky in the 1912 ballet Jeux. Choreographed by Nijinsky, the ballet employs gestures and motions used in the game of tennis.
