Introduction
2011 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of William Makepeace Thackeray, writer, artist, editor, and author of Vanity Fair, one of the most popular novels of the 19th century. To celebrate Thackeray’s life and works, Harvard University’s Houghton Library will host a one-day symposium on October 6, 2011.
The symposium will feature talks by three Thackeray scholars, along with tours of the Houghton Library exhibition on Thackeray.Symposium Registration
There is no registration fee, but as space is limited, registration is required. Completed registration forms must be received by September 30, 2011. Registration will cover all symposium sessions and events. Reservations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
Hotel Information
Registrants are responsible for making their own hotel reservations for the symposium. A limited number of rooms has been reserved for confirmed registrants only at the Sheraton Commander Hotel.

Exhibition Information
The symposium will coincide with the final weeks of the exhibition, “The Adventures of Thackeray in his way through the world,” curated by Heather G. Cole, which features rare books, manuscripts, drawings, and objects from the collections of the Houghton Library, the Morgan Library and Museum, and private collections. The exhibition will run from July 18 through October 15, and is open to visitors during Houghton Library’s normal hours.
