(Gifts, 34 items= 44.33 linear ft; purchases, 69 items= 46.84 linear ft; deposits, 27 items= 31.35 linear ft; other, 1 item = 0.04 linear ft.)

The most notable gift this year was the José María Castañé Collection, which focuses on the pivotal political and military events of the twentieth century, including the Russian Revolution; the development of Fascism and Nazism; the development of the Soviet Union; the Spanish Civil War; World War II, particularly the German invasion of the Soviet Union, and major battles in the European theatre of war; the Nuremberg Trials; and the Cold War. Smaller but no less important gifts included a collection of science fiction fanzines; the corrected typescript of D.H. Lawrence’s short story “Her turn”; and additions to the archives of Edward Hoagland, Dan Aaron, and New Directions Publishing Corp.

Important purchases include two, variant, copies of James Baldwin’s last and unpublished play, The Welcome Table, along with a filmed reading with Baldwin present and commenting, a joint purchase with the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research; the archive of French philosopher and writer Maurice Blanchot; additional papers of painter Jane Freilicher, one of the New York School circle; ephemera from the Students for a Democratic Society; and a large group of Cuban slavery documents.

The Santo Domingo Collection continues to yield surprises; this year documents by Gregory Corso, William Burroughs, Claude Farrère, Alan Ginsberg, Pierre Janet, Jacques Lacan, and others.
