Overview

The Chinese Collection of the Harvard-Yenching Library is devoted to Chinese-language research materials in all formats, but mainly in the fields of humanities and social sciences. Works published in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other areas are collected. In conjunction with the Chinese-language holdings of the Harvard Law School Library, the Rübel Asiatic Research Collection of the Fine Arts Library, the Harvard Map Collection, and the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies of the Fung Library, the Chinese Collection of the Harvard-Yenching Library plays an important role in supporting all China-related teaching and research activities at Harvard.

The collection is strong in local gazetteers 地方志 (some 5,600 titles), collectanea 叢書 (1,600 titles), writings of individuals 文集 of the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1912) periods, rare books (from the 12th to 19th centuries), and primary and secondary sources for the study of the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party, as well as the history of modern and contemporary China.

Questions and comments, including requests for materials and inquiries about how to use the collection, etc. may be directed to Xiao-he Ma, Librarian for the Chinese Collection, at 617-495-3394 or via e-mail.
