Interlibrary loan (ILL) requests for materials not owned by Harvard libraries may be made through HCL Interlibrary Loan at Widener Library. ILL services are available at no charge to affiliates of Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Science (FAS)—including faculty, staff, currently enrolled undergraduates and graduate students, degree candidates of the Extension School, and departments and staff affiliated with Central Administration.
This service is NOT extended to special borrowers, alumni/ae, individuals who have purchased library borrowing privileges, or to Harvard affiliates outside FAS and Central Administration. Each Faculty library at Harvard University has its own Interlibrary Loan office. If you are affiliated with another Faculty, please see your local library for interlibrary loan service and policies.
The average time required to obtain material through ILL is about two weeks. Requests sent internationally usually take considerably longer. Materials ordered online can be picked up at the Widener Circulation Desk during library Hours. When materials arrive, notification is sent via e-mail. Photocopied materials will be mailed to the requester and need not be returned.
Please note that some libraries require that the materials they lend be used within the borrowing library only—in the Phillips Reading Room specifically—and some do not allow photocopying. Microfilm must be used and stored in the Newspaper Microfilm Reading Room. The ILL notification will specify if this is the case. The borrower should not let others use the books received on interlibrary loan unless special arrangements have been made with the ILL office.
The loan period for materials borrowed from other libraries is set by the lending library and is indicated on a band placed on borrowed items. In the interest of maintaining good working relationships with lending libraries, due dates must be honored. All borrowed items should be returned to the Widener Circulation Book Return.
If a renewal is necessary, you may submit a renewal request through your ILL account. Log in to your ILL account and select the "View/Renew Checked Out Items" menu option. Select the individual item that you want to renew. If renewals are not possible, you will be blocked from renewing the material online. Otherwise, check your account in two to three days to confirm the new due date. If a renewal request is rejected by the lending institution, the ILL office will contact you.
Interlibrary Loan protects "each library user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted" as written by the American Library Association's Code of Ethics.

In addition, the following materials held at Loeb Music Library are not available through ILL: microforms, pre-1880 music books and scores, theses, and dissertations.
There is a basic $25 fee for interlibrary loan or photocopying services ($45 for international loans). This covers up to four volumes, six reels of one title, or photocopied material up to 150 pages. Costs may be higher if special handling is needed. Payment via OCLC ILL Fee Management (IFM) is preferred or invoices will be forwarded after the ship date. Requests for material held at a Harvard library other than Widener, Fine Arts, Fung, Government Documents/Microforms, Loeb Music, or Tozzer should be sent directly to that library. OCLC requests sent by mistake to Widener will be returned with information on how to contact the appropriate library. Non-OCLC forms will be forwarded to the appropriate library. To determine which Harvard library has a particular item, please check the HOLLIS catalog.
