Harvard-Yenching ILL services are available at no charge to affiliates of Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences—including faculty, staff, currently enrolled undergraduates and graduate students, degree candidates of the Extension School, and departments and staff affiliated with Central Administration—who wish to borrow materials from a non-Harvard Library.

This service is NOT extended to special borrowers, alumni/ae, individuals who have purchased library borrowing privileges, or to Harvard affiliates outside FAS and Central Administration.

The average time required to obtain material through ILL is about two to three weeks. When materials arrive, notifications are sent via e-mail. Loan restrictions and due dates will be indicated on the notifications. Photocopied materials need not be returned.

Materials requested through Harvard-Yenching ILL can be picked up at the ILL Office at Harvard-Yenching Library, Room 112, Monday–Friday, 9:00 am–4:45 pm. Please contact Harvard-Yenching ILL at 617-495-2756 or via e-mail if it is necessary to make other arrangements.

The loan period is set by the lending library and is indicated on a sheet inserted in the borrowed item. In the interest of maintaining good working relationships with lending libraries, patrons are expected to honor due dates. Please return all borrowed items to the ILL office of Harvard-Yenching Library.

The lending library determines whether renewals are permitted. To renew an item, contact the Harvard-Yenching ILL office at 617-495-2756 or e-mail at least a week before the due date. The ILL office will contact you with the new due date or inform you if the lending institution has rejected the renewal request.

Harvard-Yenching Library is bound by use restrictions imposed by the lending library. Some libraries require that their materials be used in the borrowing library only—these items must be used in the Harvard-Yenching Reading Room. Some libraries do not allow photocopying. Microfilm on loan must be used in the Harvard-Yenching Microfilm Reading Room and stored in the ILL office.

Harvard-Yenching provides loans or photocopies to libraries worldwide. Requests should be sent via OCLC or the HYL ILL Account Request Form.

These materials have a 28-day loan period with the possibility of one renewal.

The following items are not available through ILL: serials/periodicals; reference materials; AV materials; maps; microfiche; doctoral dissertations; rare or vulnerable materials; double leaves, old Asian bindings; and individual volumes of selected big sets. Some non-circulating materials may be available for photocopy or microfilm reproduction. Please contact the Harvard-Yenching ILL Office for more information.

There is a basic fee of  $25 for interlibrary loan or photocopying services. Loans to libraries outside the U.S. are $35 and copies $25. This covers four volumes, six reels of one title, or photocopied material up to 100 pages. Costs may be higher if a large amount of photocopying or special handling is needed.  Payment via OCLC ILL Fee Management (IFM) is preferred, or invoices will be forwarded after the ship date. If paid by invoice, payment must be made by check or money order in U.S. dollars.

Please note that each Faculty library at Harvard University has its own Interlibrary Loan office. Requests for materials held by a Harvard library other than Harvard-Yenching should be sent directly to that library.
