Digital Image File Format and Default Specifications
TIFF format, uncompressed, 24-bit RGB color. Default resolution from direct digital capture is sufficient to produce high-quality prints at 8" x 10", or at the same size as the original—whichever is larger. Standard capture resolution is 200 to 300 dpi for original material 8" x 10" and larger. Negatives, transparencies, and glass plates are scanned at resolutions sufficient to produce high-quality prints at a minimum of 8" x 10". All image files contain an appropriate ICC display profile (e.g., Adobe RGB 1998, sRGB). A screen resolution JPG copy will be included with each TIFF file.
Digital Printing Processes
Ink Jet (EPSON 7600 and 4000): Color and black-and-white up to 24" wide, length limited by roll size.
Process: Seven-ink printer designed for high-quality photographic applications prints on sheet or roll paper in widths up to 24". Uses Epson's pigment-based UltraChrome inkset. Compared to the older six-ink pigment set, the UltraChrome inkset produces more brilliant prints with a larger color gamut, higher d-max, and less metamerism. The UltraChrome inkset features a dilute "Light Black" (the "7th ink"), which helps smooth tonal transitions, reduces metamerism, and makes it possible to print high quality black-and-white images using the full seven-ink inkset.
Medium: 100% cotton hot press heavy weight coated paper, plus a selection of Epson premium papers.
Collections Reformatting Services for Harvard Libraries
Imaging Services offers a broad range of collections reformatting services designed to protect endangered library materials and to extend scholarly access to Harvard's collections beyond the University.
Harvard libraries considering reformatting projects should complete the Collections Reformatting Inquiry form to initiate the process of receiving planning assistance and cost estimates. Following submission of the form, the library will be contacted by an adviser from Imaging Services, or when appropriate, the Weissman Preservation Center.
Additional information and a sample of materials may be requested for developing project specifications and pricing. Pricing for reformatting is project specific. Fees are designed to recover projected staff and equipment costs.
Reformatting project work undertaken by Imaging Services is subject to approval by the Harvard College Library Collections Reformatting Review Committee (CRRC). Projects are reviewed monthly by the CRRC.
