The gift of friends and colleagues to establish an endowed fund for the Harvard College Library in memory of University Professor of English (1946-1986) Walter Jackson Bate A.B. 1939, A.M. 1940, Ph.D. 1942. Income shall be used to acquire books in English literature of the extended eighteenth century, the field in which he primarily taught and wrote during his distinguished academic career at Harvard.
