In 1774 Thomas Hollis, the gentleman depicted on this page, established the first endowed book fund at Harvard with the bequest of 500£ sterling. In the ensuing two centuries, the Library has celebrated the generosity of thousands of donors by placing a bookplate in items acquired through their funds.
With the help of our donors, the collection has grown into a vast resource, encompassing not just printed books, but an array of materials ranging from photographs to audio recordings to born-digital journals. As the collection expands beyond the printed word, the Harvard College Library has extended its recognition of donors into the virtual realm with a digital bookplate program that allows materials in any format to bear a plate in recognition of a fund.
Funds are listed alphabetically by the last name of the donor. Click on a letter in the menu below to be taken to a directory.
