Frequently Asked Questions about Printing with PaperCut


General information

Who can use PaperCut to print?

FAS affiliates (students, faculty, and staff in the College or Graduate School of Arts and Sciences) who have an FAS email account can print with PaperCut. PaperCut works with either a PC or a Mac laptop.

How much does it cost to print?

Printing is 5¢ per sheet, charged against your FAS Printing budget.

How do I print double sided?

After you select the printer, click the “properties” button. Then select “finishing” and “double sided.”

How do I add money to my FAS printing budget?

You can do this online by logging in to PaperCut with your FAS email username (the part before the @ symbol) and your e-mail password. The next screen allows you to add printing funds using a credit card, charging it to your termbill, or using a Crimson Cash card.

What if my job isn’t at the printer?

First check which printer you sent your job to. You can confirm this by logging on to PaperCut and clicking “recent print jobs.” You can check which printer the job was sent to and if it successfully printed.

How can I get a refund if my job doesn’t print?

Contact the FAS help desk at 617-495-9000 or help@fas.harvard.edu for a refund. In order to process a refund, they need to know which printer you sent the job to, when you sent the job, and how much money you lost.

How do I start printing from my PC laptop?

How can a non-FAS affiliate print from a personal PC laptop?

My computer says I need to install printer drivers.

Click “OK” to search for and install the driver. Your computer should automatically attempt to find the appropriate driver.

How do I re-connect to the FAS Server in order to print?

Each time you restart your computer, you’ll need to re-connect to the FAS print server in order to access your FAS printing budget. You can do this by creating a shortcut on your desktop called “Connect to FAS Printing.”

  1. Right click on your desktop, and select “New”, then “Shortcut.”
  2. In the Create Shortcut window, type "\\fas-printers" as the location of the item, and click “Next” to continue.
  3. Name the shortcut “Connect to Printing in Lamont”, and then click Finish to create it.
  4. When you want to send a print job to one of the Lamont printers, double click on the icon “Connect to Printing in Lamont” and type in your FAS username and password.

Do I need to install PaperCut or reconnect to the FAS Server in order to print with a loaner laptop?

No. The loaner laptops are set up to print to the first floor printer by the Lamont Café.

How do I re-connect to the FAS Server in order to print?

Each time you restart your computer, you'll need to re-connect to the FAS print server in order to access your FAS printing budget. Double click on the alias icon for PaperCut on your desktop to connect to the FAS print server. You can leave the application running but minimized to the dock if you want to print repeatedly in a short period of time.
