Harvard Square

By Car: From I90–Massachusetts Turnpike: Take the Cambridge/Allston exit. Bear right, go straight, cross the River Street Bridge, and immediately make a left turn onto Memorial Drive. At the third light, turn right onto JFK Street. Drive straight into Harvard Square. (Out of Town News, on your right, marks the center of Harvard Square.)

On-street parking is scarce in Cambridge, but there are several public parking lots and garages around the square.

By Subway: Harvard Yard is steps away from the Harvard Square stop on the RED Line of the MBTA (the "T"), Boston's subway system.

By Train or Bus: Amtrak and the bus terminal are located at South Station on the RED Line. Take the RED Line outbound (toward ALEWIFE) for six stops to Harvard Square.

From Logan Airport

By Subway (the "T"): Take the SILVER Line to SOUTH STATION. Switch to the RED Line outbound (toward Alewife) for six stops to HARVARD SQUARE. A ride costs $2.00, using a CharlieTicket pass.

By Taxi: The ride to Harvard Square takes about 20–30 minutes, depending upon traffic. Typically, the ride costs approximately $35–$40.

The Fung Library entrance is on the concourse level of the Knafel Building, one flight down from the building entrance.

Fung Library is adjacent to the Graduate School of Design.

From Harvard Square, take the MBTA RED Line inbound one stop to CENTRAL SQUARE. It is also on the M2 shuttle route.

Entry to the building is restricted. Harvard affiliates must present a Harvard ID to the guard to enter. Non-Harvard affiliates must be accompanied by a member of HCL Technical Services or have a scheduled appointment. Appointments are highly recommended and can be arranged by calling the receptionist at 617-495-1685. A limited amount of parking is available for authorized guests in the lot behind the building at the corner of Bishop Allen Drive and Essex Street.

Harvard-Yenching Library

Basement-level Chinese stacks to be closed June 6 - September 14, 2008

Over the summer part of the compact shelving system in the basement-level Chinese stacks area of Harvard-Yenching Library will be replaced. 

From June 6 – September 14, 2008, the area will be off limits to patrons and to staff. 

Affected collections:

  • Chinese-language HY collection (100 - 9999 , including folio/oversize works)
  • Chinese-language LC collection from (C)A – (C)PL2680

            (LC = Library of Congress cataloging system; HY = Harvard-Yenching cataloging system)

The Korean and Vietnamese collections will NOT be affected.  Basement-level staff offices will also remain open.  See the Harvard-Yenching Library Map.

The Quad Library is located on the main floor of the Hilles Building at the corner of Garden and Shepard Streets, at the edge of the Radcliffe Quadrangle, approximately seven blocks north of Harvard Square. Enter the building through the Campus Drive entrance across from Cabot House. The Harvard shuttle bus provides service between the Hilles Building and the Harvard University Science Center.

By Subway: The Hilles Building is between two MBTA stops on the RED Line — 0.6 mile from the HARVARD SQUARE stop and 0.8 mile from the PORTER SQUARE stop.

By Bus:
  • From Harvard Square via Concord Avenue: MBTA Bus #72, Bus #74, and Bus #78 stop at Bond Street on Concord Avenue. Walk down Bond Street to Garden Street. Turn right. You will see the Hilles Building on your left. (The total walk is 0.2 mile.) The Quad Library is on the main floor.
  • From Harvard Square via Massachusetts Avenue: MBTA Bus #77 stops at Shepard Street. Walk three blocks (0.3 mile) down Shepard Street. Hilles is the last building on your right. (Coming from the north to HARVARD SQUARE, Bus #77, Bus #77A, and Bus #96 all stop at Shepard Street.) The Quad Library is on the main floor.

By Shuttle: The Harvard shuttle bus provides service between the Hilles Building and the Science Center (next to Harvard Yard) during the day, evening, and night. In the afternoon and evening, the route extends to Lamont and Mather House. The night route extends to the Harvard Stadium. The bus stops in front of Currier House, which is next door to the Hilles Building.

Parking: Parking around the Hilles Building is very limited. Street parking is restricted to holders of Cambridge resident permits. Harvard University parking lots, limited to holders of Harvard parking permits, are closely monitored; violators are towed and/or ticketed. Ample bicycle racks are located across from the main entrance of the Hilles Building. The closest metered parking is on Massachusetts Avenue—three blocks (0.3 mile) away. We advise taking public transportation, walking, or cycling.
