HCL Computing Environment

HCL Information Technology Services (ITS) supports a decentralized administrative environment consisting of more than 550 permanent full- and part-time employees, as well as many additional student workers and term employees, distributed throughout multiple locations.

The computing environment in HCL is multiplatform. While Windows XP is the standard desktop operating system, Mac OS X is supported in special situations in which it provides the best solution for the needed applications. Equipment inventory includes approximately 1,050 desktop computer workstations and laptops, for both staff and patron use, more than 35 production servers, four Storage Area Networks (SANs), a virtual tape library backup system, and a Legato backup system.

With the exception of network access in the public areas, HCL ITS has responsibility for management of the network within and among Widener, Lamont, Pusey, and Houghton. Network connectivity within and among other HCL libraries is the responsibility of HUIT. HUIT also supports the e-mail and calendaring systems used by HCL staff and both the wired and wireless public access network ports in all HCL libraries.
