VES VISITING LECTURER and internationally recognized animator Steven Subotnick joins us for an evening to discuss his work as both an independent and commercial animator and as a director. Among the works to be screened are Devil™s Book, a collaged and calligraphic abstraction, Hairyman, a subjective folktale using a variety of animation styles which won the Best Animation Award at the 1999 New England Film and Video Festival, and Calling Cards, an experiment in color and motion which was celebrated at the Black Maria Film and Video Festival. He will also show excerpts from his latest work-in- progress. Subotnick has taught animation at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and at the Rhode Island School of Design. He has recently completed a book about making independent animation for Focal Press, and is currently working on an animated film inspired by events in seventeenth-century Central Europe.
