The first pool I ever swam in was a small cement pool in the garden of my childhood home in Bangkok. I was three, my sister five and my father had decided we were old enough for swimming lessons. He determined the pool's measurements by lying down on the ground and having an oval drawn around him in chalk on the grass. . .
